High-tech EDR solutions becoming new standard in cybersecurity

ISTANBUL — As the landscape of cyber threats evolves with the advancement of artificial intelligence, traditional antivirus software is increasingly proving inadequate in safeguarding digital environments. This shift has catalyzed a movement towards more sophisticated cybersecurity solutions that not only protect connected devices but also minimize vulnerabilities.

Rising Demand for EDR Solutions

Ilkem Ozar, General Manager of Kaspersky Türkiye, has observed that Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solutions are becoming a primary focus for organizations across the globe. EDR technologies are engineered to monitor and analyze unusual behavior on endpoint devices in real time, facilitating both threat detection and timely responses. Unlike their traditional counterparts, EDR systems extend beyond merely blocking known malware; they pinpoint the origin of attacks, document suspicious activities, and neutralize threats before they can proliferate.

Ozar shared insights with Anadolu, noting the global surge in demand for EDR-based strategies, with Türkiye mirroring this trend. “We have moved beyond classic antivirus solutions. Institutions now face threats that need to be monitored and responded to, not just blocked,” she remarked.

She emphasized that the efficacy of EDR systems hinges not only on the quality of the product but also on the architecture, integrated installation, and continuous support provided. “Last year, our products ranked first in 91 out of 95 independent tests, but real impact comes from combining product performance with technical support,” Ozar added.

Every Device as a Potential Threat

Drawing a parallel between EDR systems and airport security, Ozar explained: “Antivirus is like passport control, while EDR is a detailed security screening. Institutions must go beyond identity verification and implement comprehensive inspection mechanisms.” The rise of smart devices has expanded the potential attack surface significantly. “Each endpoint device—such as glasses, watches, sensors, and point-of-sale systems—must be evaluated for security. In retail, even connected cash registers can be vulnerable,” she noted.

Ozar highlighted that embedded solutions tailored for specific devices have yielded considerable customer benefits, asserting that EDR is now essential not only for IT networks but also for operational technologies (OT). She underscored the importance of addressing human error in cybersecurity, advocating for security training across all employee levels. “Cybersecurity awareness varies across sectors. While the finance industry is ahead, areas like manufacturing and retail, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), still have room for improvement,” she stated.

Türkiye’s Cybersecurity Landscape

Ozar pointed out that Türkiye is among the most targeted nations globally for cyberattacks. “We are the most targeted nation in the African region and rank among the top three or ten globally. Although ransomware attacks dropped by 16%, this still translates to 28,000 to 30,000 incidents,” she explained. This decline suggests a shift towards more targeted attacks, moving away from mass campaigns to sophisticated operations aimed at specific organizations. “That’s why EDR solutions are vital as a proactive layer that monitors and responds to threats,” she added.

She cautioned that SMEs are just as susceptible to attacks as larger corporations, emphasizing that EDR solutions should be adopted by organizations of all sizes. Ozar observed that closed network systems are no longer entirely insulated. “Updates and data transfers often require external connections, which can expose vulnerabilities. EDR brings visibility into such blind spots,” she remarked.

In closing, Ozar noted that companies are increasingly establishing integrated security frameworks, a mindset that should extend to SMEs and businesses that may underestimate their risk exposure. “Advanced cybersecurity is now a necessity wherever technology exists. EDR solutions must become the new standard, and in the near future, no endpoint should remain without EDR protection,” she concluded.
