The much-anticipated “endless cat breeding RPG,” Mewgenics, made a notable appearance at the PC Gaming Show yesterday, unveiling a quirky new trailer alongside a revised release date. Originally slated for a 2025 launch, the game is now set to debut on February 10, 2026. This shift, as explained by Mewgenics creator Edmund McMillen, is rooted in strategic planning rather than mere delays.
Strategic Timing for Success
McMillen candidly addressed the challenges of launching during the holiday season, stating, “Dude, listen. Launching in Nov–Dec is hard. We want this game to get the attention it deserves and don’t want to compete with holidays and holiday AAA releases.” This thoughtful approach reflects a growing trend in the gaming industry, where timing can be just as crucial as the quality of the product itself. The success of titles like Balatro, which launched in February 2024, and Dave the Diver, which made waves in June 2023, underscores the importance of finding the right moment to release a game.
Beyond avoiding the festive frenzy, McMillen indicated that there remains substantial work to be completed before Mewgenics is ready for its debut. The new release date affords the development team an additional eight months to refine their creation. McMillen shared a glimpse into the ongoing development efforts:
- The final boss has been drawn and is halfway animated, with hopes for implementation by the end of the month.
- Hard path rewards and random generation items are being integrated, promising exciting gameplay enhancements.
- A total of ten new cutscenes are in the works, comprising four large and six smaller segments.
- Three additional tracks have been commissioned from Ridiculon to enrich the late-game experience.
- Next week marks the beginning of the implementation of alternative and shiny furniture, adding a unique twist to gameplay.
- A significant secret late-game system has already been fully implemented.
In his message to fans, McMillen expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming release, stating, “We know you wanna play, we want you to play!” He hinted at plans for live streams and previews starting in January, along with the possibility of more trailers to keep the excitement alive. As the countdown to February begins, the gaming community eagerly anticipates what Mewgenics will bring to the table.
