A Minecraft Movie director was ‘already talking’ about casting Kirsten Dunst before her comments

Director Jared Hess of the upcoming sequel to the Minecraft movie has revealed that discussions about casting Kirsten Dunst began even before she expressed her interest in joining the project. Dunst, known for her role in Spider-Man, shared in an interview with Town & Country last year her enthusiasm for being part of “Minecraft 2,” citing her sons’ love for the 2025 video game adaptation and her desire to participate in a film that would be financially rewarding.

Fast forward a few months, and in March of this year, Dunst officially joined the cast, celebrating the news on Instagram with the heartfelt message that her “dream came true.” In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Hess elaborated on the serendipitous nature of Dunst’s casting, noting that he and leading man Jack Black had already been discussing her potential involvement when her comments gained traction.

Creative Convergence

“It is so funny and we joke about it,” Hess remarked. “Jack and I were such big fans of Kirsten. I’ve always wanted to work with her, and Jack as well. So when she started to manifest… We’d seen that (from) her doing some press stuff. We were like, ‘Holy cow! This is meant to be,’ because we were already talking about her. So it was this weird convergence of love.”

Dunst will portray the beloved character Alex in the sequel, titled A Minecraft Movie Squared. This character was hinted at in the first film’s post-credits scene, with Kate McKinnon lending her voice and Alice May Connolly providing the physical portrayal of Alex. Dunst will share the screen with returning cast members, including Black as Steve, Jason Momoa as Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison, Danielle Brooks as Dawn, and Jennifer Coolidge as Marlene. Additionally, Matt Berry will take on a new character after voicing Nitwit in the original film.

Filming commenced in New Zealand in May, and Hess noted the chemistry between Black and Dunst, stating, “They’re having so much fun in every scene together.” He added, “She’s just eating it up. She’s got two young boys that love Minecraft and I think spend a lot of time doing Minecraft LEGOs, as well. It’s some big mom points for Kirsten, and she’s working it. She’s trying to deliver for her boys, which is awesome.”

A Minecraft Movie Squared is set to hit cinemas in July 2027, promising to build on the success of its predecessor while introducing new adventures and beloved characters.
