Almost a year after launch, Frost Giant’s StarCraft wannabe has finally added the feature it’s named after: ‘We called the game Stormgate, yet we didn’t actually have any stormgates’

In a candid reflection on the initial reception of Stormgate, it’s clear that the game faced its share of skepticism upon launch. The aesthetics, narrative, and gameplay mechanics left much to be desired for some players, who felt it lacked the signature polish and clarity that characterizes the best offerings from Blizzard. The limited single-player missions, coupled with a push for additional purchases, further compounded these sentiments.

Community-Driven Enhancements

However, the tides may be turning for this title, as developer Frost Giant has embarked on a journey of significant improvement. Earlier this year, the studio undertook a comprehensive overhaul of Stormgate’s campaign, revamping its narrative and mission structure to better align with player expectations. This commitment to enhancement has recently culminated in the introduction of a highly anticipated feature: the Stormgates themselves.

In a recent update shared via Steam, Frost Giant acknowledged the long-standing community request for this feature, humorously noting, “But that changes now, because we’re about to deploy a feature so obvious, so long-requested, so in-your-face fun that we had to name the whole game after it.”

Stormgates, described as dimensional rifts created by “massive arcane storms,” will now appear at strategic locations on the game’s 1v1 maps. Players can send units to breach these gates, earning randomized rewards that promise to significantly alter the dynamics of gameplay. Unlike typical bonuses, these rewards are designed to introduce new strategic elements to the battlefield. Some examples include:

  • Soulforge Relic – (Tier 1) Enables players to clone a friendly unit using Dark Creation.
  • Sky Hunters – (Tier 2) Rock golems that stun and target air units.
  • Void Prowlers – (Tier 2) Agile, shadowy creatures adept at closing gaps in enemy lines.
  • Swarm Mother – (Tier 3) Continuously spawns groups of Swarmlings to overwhelm opponents.
  • Stormcaller Relic – (Tier 3) Creates a Dimensional Storm that damages all units caught in its vortex.

Frost Giant asserts that these new elements have a profound impact on match strategy, with players adapting their tactics around the Stormgates. Testing has shown that gamers are rerouting pushes, splitting armies, and executing complex maneuvers to capitalize on these newly introduced features.

In a strategic shift, Frost Giant plans to replace traditional ‘creep camps’—AI-controlled enemy outposts that respawn periodically—with the Stormgates, responding to community feedback that deemed the former unengaging. So far, creep camps have been removed from the three “ladder” maps, although they remain available in other custom game settings.

While initial impressions of Stormgate may have been mixed, the developer’s willingness to listen and adapt to community feedback is commendable. The Stormgates are now fully integrated into 1v1 gameplay, with plans for expansion into other game modes on the horizon.
