Android Auto Update Allows Users to Play Select Android Games in Cars
Last month Google made an exciting announcement regarding Android Auto, revealing that users would now be able to play select Android games on their car’s display. However, the requirements for this new feature are not as straightforward as initially thought.
Google had previously mentioned in March that Android Auto would support certain Android games for car displays, but specific details on when this functionality would be available and what the requirements were remained unclear.
With the recent release of the Android Auto 14.1 update in beta, support for playing games on the car display has started to roll out. Surprisingly, it has been clarified that this latest update is not actually necessary to play games on Android Auto. Games are also compatible with the current stable release, Android Auto 14.0.
Instead, the key requirement for playing games on the car display via Android Auto is having a mobile device running on Android 15 or higher. No beta versions of Android Auto are needed, and game support is now being gradually introduced to users.
According to a footnote on the Android website, Google specifies that the games will only work with compatible apps and games, requiring a mobile device running on Android 15+. The vehicle’s touch screen must also be compatible with Android Auto, and the vehicle must be parked to play the games.
As previously mentioned, games will only be accessible when the vehicle is fully parked. They may appear in the app drawer when the vehicle is in motion, but will be blacked out until the vehicle is parked. Currently, only a limited number of Android games are supported for this feature.
