Embark Studios has taken on the challenge of marketing Arc Raiders, a title that could easily be dismissed as just another extraction game. However, the studio has risen to this challenge remarkably well. While there is always a dedicated audience for shooter games, Arc Raiders is capturing a broader appeal, as evidenced by its impressive position as the fifth most wishlisted game on Steam. This ranking is particularly noteworthy given the impending release of Battlefield 6, which may soon push it to fourth place.
One concern that often looms over extraction shooters is the issue of wipes. This feature, while integral to the genre, can deter players who fear losing their hard-earned gear and progression. Yet, Embark has crafted a thoughtful approach to this dilemma, introducing a system that aims to satisfy both casual players and hardcore fans alike.
Innovative Wipe System
Embark has made it clear that it prefers to avoid mandatory wipes in Arc Raiders unless absolutely necessary. Nevertheless, the studio recognizes that wipes can inject freshness and challenge into the gameplay experience. To strike a balance, players will have the opportunity to engage in an Expedition Project after reaching level 20 at launch. This project spans eight weeks, culminating in a final week where those who complete it can choose to wipe their account.
For players who find themselves unable to progress sufficiently by the end of the Expedition Project, there’s no need for concern. Progress will carry over into the next cycle, providing another opportunity to wipe. Alternatively, players who have completed the project but wish to retain their gear can simply opt out of the wipe, allowing them to continue their journey without disruption.
Should players decide to wipe, they will lose various gameplay elements, including levels, skills, items, and crafting capabilities. However, they will retain their account’s awards, achievements, rankings, and any cosmetic items acquired through gameplay or purchase.
Beyond the chance to restart and face new challenges, there are compelling incentives for players to consider wiping their characters. Embark promises unique cosmetic rewards for each completed Expedition, alongside permanent account unlocks. Interestingly, players who wipe will receive buffs for the subsequent eight-week cycle. Initially, this raised concerns about balance, as wiping players may possess enhanced skills and advantages. However, Embark has addressed this by ensuring that these benefits will focus on cosmetics and quality-of-life improvements rather than combat superiority.
While the first wipe window is set to open in December, the proposed system appears to cater to a diverse player base. Those who prefer to keep their gear can do so without pressure, while hardcore players have the option to reset every two months, complete with enticing rewards.
As the launch date approaches on Thursday, October 30, players are encouraged to review the system requirements for Arc Raiders, particularly if their gaming rig is older. For those contemplating an upgrade, a guide to the best gaming PCs is available.
