Embark Studios has unveiled an exciting winter-themed update for Arc Raiders called Cold Snap, which promises to enhance the gaming experience significantly. While seasonal updates often bring cosmetic changes, Cold Snap introduces a formidable new challenge: frostbite. Players will now contend not only with other players and the menacing Arc robots but also with the harsh realities of a snow-covered environment.
New Gameplay Mechanics
The update transforms four of the game’s five maps—Dam Battlegrounds, Blue Gate, Buried City, and Spaceport—into winter wonderlands, complete with heavy snowfall. Prolonged exposure to the elements will result in a negative stat condition known as frostbite, which gradually depletes health. This new mechanic encourages players to think strategically about their time spent outdoors, especially during critical moments like waiting for an extraction.
For those who enjoy temperature-based challenges, Cold Snap offers a fresh take on survival mechanics. Players must either stock up on medical supplies to counteract frostbite or seek shelter to avoid the cold. This adds a layer of depth reminiscent of survival games like The Long Dark and Prologue, where players must find warmth and safety amidst the elements.
Limited-Time Events and Rewards
In addition to the new mechanics, Cold Snap introduces two limited-time reward tracks. The Flickering Flames Event challenges players to demonstrate their endurance and survival skills. By earning Merits—automatically gained from XP during rounds—players can unlock various rewards, including new gear, cosmetics, and Raider Tokens.
Meanwhile, the Candleberry Banquet Project invites players to loot event-specific items during their runs. As they progress through five stages, players will reveal new scenes on a banquet table, earning rewards such as cosmetic items, Raider Tokens, and Merits for the Flickering Flames Event.
Expedition Project and New Raider Deck
The Cold Snap update also marks the launch of the first Expedition Project, allowing dedicated players to wipe their accounts for a fresh start. Those who have contributed the necessary items and resources will have a limited window to reset their accounts, earning temporary buffs and permanent unlocks, including unique cosmetics and additional stash slots.
Furthermore, players can look forward to the introduction of the first new Raider Deck on December 26, featuring an ice hockey theme. This deck will offer rewards such as cosmetics, item bundles, emotes, and Raider Tokens, with no expiration date, similar to the inaugural Deck.
As the Cold Snap update rolls out on December 16, players eagerly anticipate the opportunity to explore the snowy landscapes of Spaceport and Blue Gate. With the introduction of frostbite mechanics and engaging new events, the update promises to invigorate gameplay and challenge even the most seasoned players.
