August is unfolding as a notably subdued month for new video game releases, particularly in the realm of original titles. However, it is proving to be a vibrant period for remakes and remasters, which are set to take center stage this summer. Personally, while I like to think I’ve outgrown nostalgia, I find myself irresistibly drawn to the allure of beloved classics being revitalized and presented anew. The feast begins on August 14 with the launch of Dawn of War: Definitive Edition.
Grimdark never changes
Dawn of War holds a special place in my heart as a pivotal real-time strategy game, showcasing Relic’s exceptional ability to transition to 3D without compromising gameplay quality. The expansions further elevated the experience, introducing dynamic campaigns and a plethora of Warhammer 40k units. According to design director Philippe Boulle, “The fundamental game still works. That’s what we want to deliver.”
What can players expect? All expansions and multiplayer modes will be consolidated under a single executable, textures will be enhanced, and the game will now support 4K resolution. Additionally, improvements in lighting and reflections, camera adjustments, and a shift to a 64-bit architecture will facilitate modding for more ambitious projects.
Run for cover
While Gears of War has remained a constant presence, its relevance has waned over time. Enter Gears of War: Reloaded, which aims to rekindle the magic of the original title. This remake is a tougher sell for me; although the game was undeniably influential, it also ushered in a wave of similar cover shooters that often felt repetitive. The best remakes provide a chance to revisit unique experiences that have since faded, whereas this title merely allows us to replay the genesis of a genre that became increasingly overdone.
Nonetheless, Reloaded boasts significant graphical enhancements and modern features, including cross-play, cross-progression, DLSS, and HDR. The Coalition has also introduced an optional streamlined control scheme, along with all post-launch content available for free. Players can anticipate its release on August 26.
Country life
For those who enjoy life and farming simulations, Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, a remake of the classic Harvest Moon DS title, is set to launch on August 27. While I may not typically gravitate towards this genre, it promises a refreshing take on farm life that could appeal to many. As noted by Kara in her preview, “Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar has given me a look at what streamlined farm life could look like.” With features that enhance gameplay efficiency, it could very well set a new standard for future farming simulations.
Undercover boss
The highlight of the month arrives on August 28 with the eagerly anticipated remake of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. This title stands out as one of the most intriguing entries in the Metal Gear Solid series. While I hold a soft spot for MGS2, with its memorable characters and plot twists, MGS3 remains a remarkable and ambitious experience.
Delta is particularly noteworthy as it marks Konami’s most significant MGS project since Hideo Kojima’s departure. While there may be some trepidation regarding this transition, the remake can lean on the solid foundation laid by Kojima, akin to bowling with the bumpers up. As a full remake, it promises to deliver a contemporary gaming experience while honoring the legacy of one of the early 2000s’ finest titles. New features, including the Fox Hunt multiplayer mode and real-time wear and tear mechanics, add to the excitement.
While August may not be bustling with new releases, it certainly holds a wealth of nostalgic treasures to explore. The month is set to be memorable, not just for the return of beloved classics, but also for the diverse ways in which they are being reimagined for today’s audience. Each title offers a unique perspective on nostalgia, from the polished revival of Dawn of War to the moody co-op experience of Gears of War, the refreshing approach of Grand Bazaar, and the thrilling return of MGS Delta. The landscape of gaming is indeed looking promising this August.
