Australians must now prove their age to buy R18+ games on the Xbox store

In a significant move to align with Australian regulations, Microsoft has announced that users of the Xbox and Microsoft Store will soon be required to verify their age when attempting to purchase games rated R18+. This change is set to take effect in August 2026, as detailed in emails sent to users over the weekend.

Age Verification Implementation

The email from Microsoft clearly states, “Starting August 2026, to comply with Australia regulations, you may need to verify your age before purchasing or accessing apps and games rated 18+ on Microsoft Store and Xbox Store.” This initiative reflects a growing trend among digital platforms to enforce age restrictions more stringently.

Age verification technology has faced increased scrutiny this year, particularly following reports regarding the security practices of verification provider Persona. Researchers have raised concerns about the lax information security measures employed by Persona, which is widely used across platforms such as Roblox, Twitch, and VRChat. Notably, Discord also trialed this technology among its UK users.

Adding to the concerns, a data breach at Discord in 2025 compromised the personal information of 70,000 users, including government-issued photo IDs. These incidents have sparked a broader debate about the implications of age verification technology, with critics arguing that it may serve as a vehicle for enhanced surveillance rather than merely a protective measure for children against adult content.

While Microsoft is moving swiftly to comply with these regulations, other platforms like Steam and PlayStation have yet to adopt similar rigorous age verification processes in Australia. This discrepancy highlights the varying approaches within the industry as companies navigate the complexities of regulatory compliance and user privacy.
