Bithell Games laying off 11 staff

Indie developer Bithell Games is navigating a challenging landscape, announcing a reduction in its workforce. In a heartfelt message shared on social media, founder Mike Bithell revealed that the studio is parting ways with 11 employees due to difficulties in securing new projects. This decision follows the recent launch of their title, Tron: Catalyst, which debuted in June.

Challenges in the Gaming Industry

Mike Bithell expressed the studio’s struggles in his post, stating, “It became clear leading up to the release of our most recent game that we were not immune to the challenges faced by many game development teams seeking funding partners in 2024 and 2025.” The competitive nature of the gaming industry has made it increasingly difficult for smaller studios to find the necessary financial backing.

In an effort to support those affected, Bithell emphasized the importance of communication, noting, “We’ve fortunately been able to communicate these challenges ahead of time, and work with affected staff to ease departures as much as possible via severance packages.” This proactive approach aims to mitigate the impact of the layoffs on the talented individuals who have contributed to the studio’s success.

Bithell took a moment to highlight the exceptional skills of his team, stating, “This was an incredible team of exceptionally talented people.” He extended an invitation to other developers, encouraging them to consider the laid-off employees for future opportunities: “If you’re a developer reading this, and you’re hiring; anyone among those affected would be a great addition to your studio, please reach out if we can help to put you in touch.”

Despite the layoffs, Bithell assured fans that the studio’s existing self-published games will remain available, along with ongoing support for them. “We are incredibly grateful for our audience, and hope that your interest in our work follows individual team members as they head into other roles,” he added, reinforcing the studio’s commitment to its community.

As Bithell Games reflects on this difficult moment, the founder poignantly remarked, “Bithell Games was always defined and elevated by our people. Today we are less.” The studio’s journey continues, albeit with a heavy heart as it adjusts to new realities in the ever-evolving gaming industry.
