Colossal Order is preparing to transition Cities: Skylines 2 to Iceflake Studios, marking a significant moment in the game’s development journey. Before this handover, the developer has introduced a new bike patch that enhances the gameplay experience by incorporating bicycles and electric scooters into the city landscape. This update not only adds these eco-friendly modes of transportation but also the necessary infrastructure to support a bicycle-friendly environment.
Enhancements for Cyclists
In the latest update, players will find that their cycling citizens can navigate the standard road network alongside vehicles. However, the option to create dedicated bicycle paths and lanes is now available, promoting a safer and healthier urban experience. To further encourage cycling, various types of bike parks have been introduced, providing secure parking options for cyclists. This initiative mirrors the impact of car parks, which help reduce street congestion by incentivizing citizens to choose bicycles over cars.
Beyond cycling features, the bike patch enriches the game with additional elements. A new campfire area and several business plazas have been added, ensuring that workers can enjoy their breaks without overindulging. Furthermore, the update includes a range of new transportation buildings, such as:
- A train depot
- A railway terminus station, extendable with a multiplatform bus station and tram stop
- A cargo transfer station
- Three new tram stations
Additionally, two new types of wind turbines and a small cemetery have been introduced, catering to the diverse needs of city management.
As Colossal Order prepares to step back from its role in developing Skylines 2, it plans to implement Asset Mods before officially passing the torch at the beginning of next year. Following this transition, Iceflake Studios will take the lead, with plans for the game expected to be revealed soon.
The reasons behind Colossal Order’s decision to transfer development responsibilities remain somewhat unclear. The sequel has faced its share of challenges, making this handover an unusual move in the industry. Paradox Interactive, the publisher, has a history of reallocating projects among different developers, as seen with titles like Prison Architect 2 and Bloodlines 2.
