Expanding the Vault
It’s little surprise that, with their game catalogue launching, Crunchyroll have been expanding their Vault with a huge variety of obscure cult classic releases. And for fans of those who simply don’t get the love or attention they deserve, the two latest additions to the Crunchyroll Game Vault are sure to excite as Destiny’s Princess and Ys I Chronicles arrive for mobile!
Destiny’s Princess: A War Story, A Love Story
Destiny’s Princess: A War Story, A Love Story is a cult classic visual novel that’s debuting on mobile for the first time thanks to Crunchyroll. Challenging you to lead your kingdom to victory as a brave princess, you’ll also navigate complex and heartfelt relationships with the requisite cast of handsome husbandos.
Ys I Chronicles
Meanwhile, in Ys I Chronicles, things are a little more action-oriented. This hack ‘n slash action RPG first released way back in the 2000s as a remake of series flagship Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen, and sees you playing as heroic swordsman Adol Christin in his quest to free the land of Esteria from marauding demons.
Crunchatise me
I’d say that Crunchyroll has, quite fittingly, managed to exploit yet another niche with their Game Vault. Whereas Netflix has to balance the appeal of its promotional releases with the indie hits that bulk out its catalogue (and I’d argue are the worthier additions) Crunchyroll knows its audience is made up of otakus both extreme and casual.
This means that they can bring relatively obscure releases to the West, in many cases for the first time on mobile, and rely on an audience already interested in them. And from the perspective of exposing players to new and unusual releases, it’s certainly doing its job with the recent additions of cult classics like Steins; Gate and Ao Oni.
It’s certainly being bulked out since Catherine lamented the relatively slim pickings back in 2023, which I suppose means that as it increases in terms of releases those of you seeking value for money can now safely give it a second glance.
