Dragon’s Dogma 2 is already at half the lifetime sales of the original cult classic, and if Capcom wants more, it should give us a Dark Arisen-style expansion

As of early November, Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma 2 has achieved a remarkable milestone, surpassing four million copies sold. This accomplishment is particularly impressive for a niche RPG that comes with a substantial price tag, marking a significant victory for the title. The sequel is now halfway to matching the lifetime sales of its predecessor, which includes the popular expanded edition, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen.

It’s noteworthy that the original Dragon’s Dogma and its expanded version took over a decade to reach similar sales figures. In contrast, Dragon’s Dogma 2 has reached this halfway point in just a year and a half, highlighting its swift acceptance among gamers.

Performance and Reception

While many players, including myself, are willing to overlook lower frame rates for the thrill of climbing dragons and engaging in dynamic combat, others have faced more significant performance challenges. This has contributed to the game’s “Mixed” reviews on Steam, primarily due to ongoing crashes and frame rate issues that some players have encountered. Fortunately, I have not experienced these problems personally.

Despite these hurdles, my hope is that Dragon’s Dogma 2 will continue to thrive and evolve. The game showcases ambitious RPG elements, featuring exceptional combat mechanics and innovative class designs that deserve further exploration and recognition.

What I yearn for is a sequel to the beloved Dark Arisen, providing a compelling reason to return to the game after investing over 100 hours in exploration and experimentation. However, given the current landscape, I remain skeptical about the likelihood of an expansion. This year, the game has only received two minor updates, addressing a total of six bugs, which suggests that development resources may be limited.

Yet, amidst these uncertainties, a glimmer of hope remains. As any devoted fan would agree, the world of Dragon’s Dogma has much more to offer, and the potential for future content is a dream worth holding onto.
