Everything to Know About the ASLC’s Showing of ‘A Minecraft Movie’

Have you had the chance to experience A Minecraft Movie? If you’re a devoted fan, you might even be planning a second or third visit. The Askew Student Life Center (ASLC) at Florida State University recently hosted a complimentary screening of Warner Bros. Pictures’ A Minecraft Movie for students, creating an exciting opportunity for the community. This special event took place on Saturday, November 8, with doors opening at 9 p.m.

A Minecraft Movie

A Minecraft Movie, which debuted on April 4, boasts a runtime of 101 minutes. As anticipated, the film draws inspiration from the beloved sandbox video game, merging live-action sequences with animated, block-shaped environments. The star-studded cast features notable names such as Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Jennifer Coolidge, contributing to its widespread appeal. The film has also sparked a flurry of memes, with iconic scenes like “Chicken Jockey,” “Flint and Steel,” and “As a child I yearned for the mines” circulating widely online.

The plot follows a group of humans who find themselves drawn into a Minecraft portal, embarking on an adventure alongside the fan-favorite character, Steve. While the movie may appear whimsical at first glance, it delves into deeper themes, exploring familial bonds, betrayal, and the essence of true love. Additionally, A Minecraft Movie pays homage to the late Minecraft YouTuber TechnoBlade, who passed away from cancer in 2022.

The ASLC

The ASLC didn’t stop at just screening the film; they organized a variety of Minecraft-themed activities starting at 5 p.m. on November 8. Attendees enjoyed engaging activities such as Mining and Chalk, crafts, karaoke, and a scavenger hunt throughout the day. Limited activities like Open World and Creative Mode Server were available from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Other events overlapped, including the Hunger Games and Minecraft YouTube videos at 5 p.m., followed by the Bedwars Tournament at 7 p.m. The evening culminated with karaoke at 7:30 p.m., making for a lively Saturday that was completely free for FSU students.

Final reminders

Now that you’re familiar with the movie and the ASLC activities, here are some essential tips for future moviegoers attending screenings at the ASLC. Based on personal experience, it’s wise to arrive early, as lines can get quite long. For a 10 p.m. showing, consider arriving by 8 p.m. to secure your spot, especially for a popular film like A Minecraft Movie.

The ASLC has established guidelines stating that “no excessive objects are allowed” in the theater. This includes items such as weapons, costume masks that obscure identity, or anything that could disrupt the viewing experience, such as pickaxes, helmets, noise makers, or even a live chicken.

For students, movie screenings at the ASLC are entirely free, but don’t forget to bring your FSUID card. For non-students, tickets are priced at for General Admission and for faculty, staff, and students from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) and Tallahassee State College (TSC). Concessions are available at reasonable prices, especially when compared to typical movie theater costs.

With this information in hand, you’re all set for a fun and successful viewing of A Minecraft Movie at the ASLC!
