Former Rockstar dev says the GTA 6 leaks are a ‘nothing burger’: ‘There won’t be much damage’

Rockstar finds itself navigating a challenging public relations landscape as it prepares for the highly anticipated gameplay reveal of Grand Theft Auto 6, set to debut exclusively on Netflix. With just days to go, the developer is actively pursuing the individual responsible for leaking 11 pieces of gameplay footage over a span of six days, suggesting that this source may have ongoing access to a playable version of the game.

Industry Insights on the Leaks

In the midst of this turmoil, former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij, who dedicated nearly 14 years to the company and contributed to every GTA release from GTA 3 to GTA 4’s Ballad of Gay Tony, has offered a perspective that may ease some concerns. Vermeij characterized the leaks as a “nothing burger,” indicating that their impact may be minimal in the grand scheme of things.

Vermeij explained that the leaks are likely to be a mere “tiny blip” for a franchise known for its longevity. Drawing from the success of GTA 5, which enjoyed a sales lifespan exceeding a decade, he suggested that the majority of potential players are not deeply engaged with online discussions or leaks. “90% of future players don’t spend their time on the internet looking for video snippets. They don’t have the time and don’t want spoilers,” he noted.

Reflecting on past incidents of brand damage, Vermeij recalled an estimated million revenue loss in 2005 and a subsequent million class action settlement in 2009. In light of these experiences, he expressed confidence that the current leaks would not significantly harm the brand. “There won’t be much damage if any,” he stated in response to another user on X.

Even in the hypothetical scenario where a major plot point, such as the game’s ending, were to be leaked, Vermeij remained unfazed. “That would suck,” he admitted, “but people will still play it.” This sentiment underscores a broader understanding within the industry that while leaks can create temporary disruptions, the allure of a well-crafted game often outweighs the noise surrounding its release.
