Google Play Store Welcomes Fortnite Back
Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney has emerged victorious in his ongoing battle with platform holders over developer-user relationships. After clashes with Apple and Google that led to Fortnite being removed from Android and iOS platforms, Epic’s dispute with Google has finally been resolved.
Fortnite had already returned to iOS and Android when the mobile version of the Epic Games Store launched globally in 2024. Now, Android users can access Fortnite through the Epic Games Store and download it from the Google Play Store.
Google has also made significant changes, allowing competing app stores, payment processes, and reducing Google Play fees for developers using its billing system on Android devices.
In a blog post, Sameer Samat, president of the Android ecosystem, emphasized the importance of flexibility, choice, and safety for developers and users on billions of devices. The updates will be official worldwide by September 30, 2027, with earlier rollouts in specific regions.
While the exact return date for Fortnite on the Google Play Store remains unspecified, Sweeney promises it will be “soon.” These changes aim to strengthen the Android ecosystem, fostering successful developers and high-quality apps for all users.
