Fans of miniature plastic soldiers have reason to celebrate as Games Workshop has made a significant move by reintroducing a collection of classic Warhammer and Warhammer 40K video games to Steam. This marks the first time many of these titles are available on Valve’s platform, alongside a selection of others that have been absent for several years.
Reviving Classic Titles
The newly available titles on Steam include three from the Warhammer fantasy range: Shadow of the Horned Rat, Mark of Chaos – Gold Edition, and Dark Omen. Additionally, four games from the Warhammer 40K universe have made their return: Chaos Gate, Fire Warrior, Final Liberation, and Rites of War.
For those who grew up immersed in the Warhammer universe, these games may evoke a sense of nostalgia. Personally, I fondly recall the countless hours spent playing Chaos Gate after discovering the 40K universe at the tender age of 10. Although it was an XCOM clone, my youthful ignorance of the original MicroProse title allowed me to fully appreciate the thrill of commanding Space Marines.
Years later, as a Tau collector, I found joy in Fire Warrior, despite its lack of polish and depth as a first-person shooter. While I have yet to experience the other five titles included in this announcement, I have heard positive feedback about Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat and Warhammer 40K: Rites of War, particularly among fans of the Eldar and those who appreciate the rich lore of the setting.
Classics Sale on Steam
In celebration of these nostalgic re-releases, Games Workshop is hosting a Classics sale on Steam, featuring discounts on all 19 titles that have returned. This sale also includes price reductions on more recent releases, such as the acclaimed Dawn of War – Definitive Edition and Dawn of War 2 – Anniversary Edition.
For newcomers to the Warhammer 40K universe who might prefer to avoid the allure of plastic miniatures, I recommend starting with one of these recent titles, alongside the highly praised Space Marine 2. These games offer a fantastic entry point into the expansive and captivating world of Warhammer.
