Gears of War: E-Day devs are embracing ‘old-school’ multiplayer in 2026: ‘No battle pass, no tour of duty, no gimmicks, no bullsh*t’

The Coalition has unveiled intriguing details about the multiplayer aspect of Gears of War: E-Day, presenting a refreshing take that diverges from the current trends in high-budget multiplayer shooters. In a recent hands-on preview, it was revealed that the multiplayer experience is divided into two distinct modes: Horde Siege (PvE) and Versus (PvP). Both modes offer engaging gameplay that evokes a nostalgic feel reminiscent of 2007, featuring classic arena settings, mirrored loadouts, and light customization options.

Earn Your Gear

One of the standout features of E-Day is its commitment to player empowerment. According to the studio’s blog, “nearly every single item in Gears of War: E-Day can be earned by simply playing the game.” This approach eliminates the need for battle passes or convoluted progression systems, allowing players to focus on enjoying the game without unnecessary distractions.

Upon launch, E-Day will boast an impressive roster of 60 unlockable characters spanning the two primary factions. Players can unlock these characters through challenges or by utilizing in-game currency. Additionally, the game promises a steady stream of free maps, modes, and cosmetics over five planned seasons, indicating a year-long commitment to ongoing support. While there will be select “partnered items” available for purchase, The Coalition assures players that these will be thoughtfully integrated into the Gears universe.

Cosmetics with Character

The design philosophy behind E-Day’s cosmetic items is rooted in authenticity and creativity. The Coalition aims to create a gritty aesthetic that resonates with the game’s established lore and themes. The blog states, “we love this universe and wanted to expand on it in exciting ways,” which has led to a focus on original characters and world elements rather than promotional cross-overs. While some cosmetics may venture into more imaginative territory, especially within the Legendary tier, they will remain grounded in the essence of the Gears franchise.

Balancing Fun and Accessibility

In a bid to avoid the pitfalls of grind-heavy gameplay, The Coalition has designed a system where players can earn Coins, a free-to-earn currency, through gameplay, leveling up, and completing medals. Although there is a weekly cap on Coins earned through matches, the studio is open to adjusting this limit based on player feedback. “Earning Coins shouldn’t be an arduous grind,” they emphasize, aiming to make the pursuit of skins and new items an enjoyable experience.

However, the introduction of a premium currency, Iron, allows players to bypass the grind for cosmetics if they choose. This dual approach to monetization suggests that while E-Day embraces a classic ethos, it also acknowledges the realities of modern gaming economics.
