Google’s Vision for Seamless Android App Experience Across Platforms
Last year, Google introduced Android XR, a new operating system for mixed-reality headsets and glasses. This innovative platform will support the Google Play Store, but the challenge lies in adapting apps and games from traditional mobile screens to the immersive world of Android XR.
Sam Bright, the lead at Google Play, emphasized the importance of enabling developers to create apps that work seamlessly across all Android form factors. The goal is to allow users to switch devices without losing access to their content, regardless of the form factor.
Google has already made progress in this area, with Android 16 focusing on adaptive apps to address issues like black bars on larger displays. Additionally, AI tools are streamlining the development process, making it easier for developers to port their code across different platforms.
Looking ahead, Google is investing in features like Curated Spaces and Collections on Google Play to enhance app discovery and user experience. While specifics are still under wraps, more announcements are expected later in 2025.
As we anticipate the launch of Project Moohan and other Android XR devices this year, Google’s commitment to a seamless app experience across platforms is evident. Stay tuned for more updates at Google I/O in May.
