Jason Momoa has been cast in the live-action adaptation of the popular video game Helldivers, a project being developed by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. This announcement, made by Deadline, highlights Momoa’s growing portfolio in the realm of video game adaptations, which already includes titles like Minecraft and Street Fighter, with whispers of a Just Cause project from years past.
Collaboration with Justin Lin
Momoa will collaborate with director Justin Lin, known for his work on the Fast and Furious franchise. The film is based on Arrowhead’s engaging and chaotic space-based shooter, which has garnered a dedicated fan base. While details regarding Momoa’s character in Helldivers remain under wraps, the film is slated for release on November 10, 2025.
The journey of the Helldivers film began with its announcement in January 2025, alongside another adaptation for Horizon Zero Dawn. Shortly thereafter, Johan Pilestedt from Arrowhead confirmed the developer’s involvement in the film, albeit in a limited capacity. Lin’s attachment to the project was confirmed in December, leading to mixed reactions among fans. Some expressed disappointment over Lin’s lack of gaming experience; however, he has turned this perceived disadvantage into a unique perspective for his vision of the film. Arrowhead has publicly supported Lin, emphasizing their trust in his direction and dismissing calls for him to play the game prior to directing.
In addition to his role in Helldivers, Momoa is set to portray Blanka in the upcoming Street Fighter film, which is scheduled for release on October 16. As anticipation builds for Sony’s Helldivers film, fans can quench their thirst with a fan-made project currently available on YouTube. Created by the dedicated volunteers at Plot Coalition, this unofficial film runs nearly an hour, making it the longest Helldivers fan project to date.
