In the vibrant world of Monster Hunter Wilds, the quest for fishing mastery takes a thrilling turn with the challenge of catching a whopper. Kanya, your esteemed fishing senpai, has set you on a mission to reel in one of these impressive aquatic creatures as part of The Catch of a Lifetime quest. While locating a whopper is relatively straightforward compared to other elusive fish, the real challenge lies in the art of the catch.

To embark on your whopper-catching adventure, head to area 17 of the Scarlet Forest, specifically above the dam. This location may ring a bell as the site of your previous encounter with Uth Duna. As you gaze across the lake towards the remnants of ancient structures, keep an eye out for the large fish that inhabit these waters. If they seem elusive, try casting your line to the right side of the lake, where a few whoppers often linger.
It’s important to note that the term “whopper” encompasses a variety of sizable fish in Monster Hunter Wilds, including the Gajau, Speartuna, and Great Trevally. To begin your fishing endeavor, equip your fishing rod by holding the left bumper on your controller and selecting it from the wheel. Cycle through your lures until you reach the Starduster Rig provided by Kanya. Once you’re ready, follow these steps to catch a whopper:
- When the fish bites, pull the rod in the direction it’s swimming.
- After a brief struggle, your hunter will raise the rod, signaling that the fish is tiring. At this point, you can start reeling it in as you would normally.
- If the whopper leaps from the water, pay close attention to where it lands—left, right, or down. Move the left stick in that direction and press RT to prevent it from escaping.
Successfully executing these steps will reward you with a prized catch. However, patience is key, as enticing whoppers to bite can be quite challenging, especially when they are swimming deep underwater. Aim to cast your line as far as possible and adjust your camera angle to accurately gauge the fish’s position relative to your lure. If you spot a patch of disturbed water with flying monsters feeding on fish, this is often a promising area to find a whopper like a Gajau or Swordfish.
As you navigate the waters, ensure you are fishing in an open area free from obstacles that could snag your line, as this will simplify the process. For those who find themselves struggling, consider utilizing decoration melding to craft and equip a level one Ranger jewel, which grants the Outdoorsman skill, making fishing a bit easier.
Once you’ve successfully caught your whopper, return to Kanya to receive your well-deserved rewards: five gunpowderfish scales, five honey, and 200 Guild Points.
