In the wake of Bloodlines 2’s struggles, Vampire The Masquerade’s most famous face is leaving Paradox

In the vibrant tapestry of tabletop role-playing games, few narratives resonate as deeply as that of Vampire: The Masquerade. For many, including myself, the journey began with the captivating series LA By Night, which ignited a passion for rolling dice and exploring the intricate worlds crafted by talented storytellers. Along this path, I forged lasting friendships, experienced the thrill of unexpected outcomes, and immersed myself in the thrilling escapades of characters like Annabelle, Jasper, Nelli, and Victor. Jason Carl, a pivotal figure in this revival, has been instrumental in breathing new life into the franchise. However, despite the acclaim surrounding both LA By Night and New York By Night, the recent forays into video gaming have encountered turbulence, leaving the World of Darkness in a precarious position.

Challenges in the Gaming Realm

The anticipation surrounding Bloodlines 2 was palpable, yet it ultimately fell short of expectations. Paradox Interactive’s decision to announce a million write-down on the project speaks volumes about its struggles, reflected in a modest 57% score on Steam. While my review highlighted the commendable characterization by The Chinese Room, the game’s lackluster combat mechanics and narrative depth prevented it from securing a place among the best RPGs.

Jason Carl’s journey with the franchise began in 2010 as CEO of the original By Night Studios, evolving into a game producer role for the fifth edition of VTM in 2018, and later as brand marketing manager. His presence in the community is perhaps best recognized through the engaging performances in LA and New York by Night, featuring notable talents such as Erika Ishii from Apex Legends, Alexander Ward from Critical Role, and even the illustrious Matt Mercer and Brennan Lee Mulligan.

A Fond Farewell

In a heartfelt message shared on the World of Darkness Discord, Carl reflected on his departure as “the close of one extraordinary chapter in an ongoing story.” He expressed pride not only in the narratives crafted but also in the diverse voices that have contributed to the franchise’s evolution. From the launch of the fifth edition to the Storytellers Vault program and the revival of White Wolf at this year’s Darkness Emergent celebration, Carl emphasized the importance of community in the World of Darkness, stating, “It has always been strongest when it belongs to many, and I believe its best is still to come.”

With confidence in the future, Carl acknowledged the leadership of executive vice president Marco Behrmann and creative director Jess Lanzillo, along with the talented team shaping the brand’s next chapter. Their creativity and passion, he believes, will ensure the World of Darkness continues to thrive and surprise.

New Adventures Await

Looking ahead, Carl is set to embark on a new journey with Tabletop Vacations, where he will take on the role of Dean of Dungeon Master University. This initiative aims to provide a space for Dungeon Masters to enhance their skills, craft immersive worlds, and ignite the flames of imagination. “It is a new realm, but the same calling: to guide, to share, and to help others build their own stories, together,” he shared, hinting at the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.

As I reflect on my experiences with LA By Night, meeting Carl at Gamescom during the Bloodlines 2 tour remains a cherished memory. While the prospect of his absence from the World of Darkness is bittersweet, I am eager to witness the unfolding narrative of this beloved universe. Wherever Carl’s path leads, one can be certain that the echoes of vampire tales will continue to resonate through his endeavors.
