Dementium: The Ward Resurfaces on Steam

Dementium: The Ward has made its return, launching on Steam just in time for this week’s Scream Fest. The game is currently available at a tempting 40% discount, appealing to those who fondly remember the horror experience it offered nearly two decades ago on the Nintendo DS. One enthusiastic Steam reviewer likened Dementium to a blend of Silent Hill and Doom 3, while also drawing parallels to Afraid of Monsters for fans familiar with Half-Life horror mods.

While Dementium may not be hailed as a classic in the horror genre, it possesses a certain cleverness and uniqueness that sets it apart. Its re-emergence on Steam prompts a reflection on the myriad of titles developed for the Nintendo DS that share similar traits. Surprisingly, many of these games remain largely unplayable outside of the DS platform, even 15 years after Nintendo ceased production of new handheld devices.

The landscape of handheld PC gaming has evolved significantly in recent years, and it is anticipated that more players will engage with their Steam libraries away from traditional desktop setups. The current PC audience appears increasingly receptive to games that may have been produced on a modest budget yet deliver exceptional experiences. The Nintendo DS was particularly adept at creating such titles.

In fact, one could argue that even Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood—a Sonic the Hedgehog RPG developed by Bioware, notorious for its less-than-stellar soundtrack—deserves a port to PC. After all, preserving gaming history is essential, and this quirky title certainly has a story to tell.
