Link PC VR Games Are Now Launchable From Quest’s Library In v81 PTC

Your Quest Link PC VR games have made a seamless entrance into the Horizon OS library with the latest v81 PTC update. This new integration allows users to launch their PC VR titles without having to navigate through the outdated Rift Dash interface, which has remained largely unchanged for over five years.

For those who may not be familiar, Quest Link is a built-in feature of Meta’s headsets that enables them to function as PC VR headsets. This can be accomplished either through a USB connection or via your home Wi-Fi network. Traditionally, users would access Link from the Quick Controls menu, leading them into the legacy Rift Dash interface to launch PC VR titles and adjust settings.

What Is the Public Test Channel (PTC)?

The Public Test Channel (PTC) serves as the beta release platform for Quest’s Horizon OS. By opting in, users receive pre-release builds of upcoming versions, which may contain features not present in the final stable releases. It’s important to note that while the PTC offers a glimpse into future updates, some features may not transition to the stable version, and on rare occasions, changes in the PTC might not make it to the final build.

With the Horizon OS v81 PTC update, users who have configured their headsets with the Quest Link app on a compatible PC within the same local network will now find their installed Link PC VR Store applications displayed in the Horizon OS library, clearly labeled as ‘PCVR.’ This marks a significant shift in user experience; clicking on a PC VR game will launch it directly, eliminating the need to navigate through the old Rift Dash interface. Furthermore, pressing the Meta button on the right Touch controller will now bring up the Horizon OS interface instead of the Rift Dash, and exiting a game will return users to their standalone home environment.

This update presents a notably streamlined experience compared to the previous Quest Link functionality, making the process of launching into a PC VR game not only faster but also more intuitive than alternatives like Valve’s Steam Link or Guy Godin’s Virtual Desktop. It effectively integrates PC VR into the Quest ecosystem, enhancing the overall user experience.

While this development is surprising given Meta’s recent focus away from PC VR content and the infrequency of updates to Quest Link, it is undoubtedly a welcome enhancement for users. However, it is essential to note that this feature currently applies only to Meta’s PC VR Store games and does not extend to PC VR titles purchased on Steam.
