Microsoft enters handheld games PC fray with Asus partnership

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Microsoft has joined forces with Asus to unveil its inaugural portable Xbox, marking a significant step in the gaming landscape. This partnership has birthed two innovative consoles: the Xbox Ally and the more robust Xbox Ally X, both of which operate on the latest iteration of Windows—Windows 11.

Enhanced Gaming Experience

The Windows-based architecture of these devices promises enhanced compatibility with various gaming platforms right from the start, including popular launchers such as Battle.net. Central to this experience is the integration of Game Pass and the Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming service, which are poised to elevate the gaming experience for users.

While Microsoft has introduced an optimized version of Windows 11 tailored for gaming, the distinctions between the new Xbox hardware and Asus’s existing lineup of ROG Ally handhelds remain somewhat ambiguous. However, Roanne Sones, Xbox’s Senior Vice President of Gaming Devices and Ecosystem, emphasized the user-friendly nature of the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X. She stated, “With the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X, players can look forward to an approachable gaming experience that travels with you wherever you go, featuring several new and first-of-their-kind features on both devices—from an immersive Xbox full screen experience to an aggregated gaming library with access to installed games from leading PC storefronts, and more.”

Furthermore, Sones highlighted the seamless integration of Windows 11, designed to be intuitive from the moment users power on their devices. The Game Bar feature simplifies navigation, allowing players to return home, browse their library, launch or quit games, chat with friends, and adjust settings effortlessly.

As anticipation builds, details regarding pricing remain under wraps, but the launch is expected to occur towards the end of 2025, setting the stage for a new era in portable gaming.
