Microsoft warns that the latest Windows 11 update may crash PC games now

Microsoft has once again paused the deployment of its latest Windows 11 update, known as 24H2, due to significant issues affecting users playing select Ubisoft games. The titles experiencing difficulties include Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Assassin’s Creed Origins, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Star Wars Outlaws, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

Widespread User Complaints

Players have reported a range of frustrating problems, such as black screens, freezing, and unresponsiveness during gameplay or while loading these games. One user expressed their disappointment on Reddit, stating, “I just bought a new gaming laptop with RTX 4080, Intel i9 14900hx. I can’t play the game (Origins) even for 5 minutes because it crashes to a black screen, with audio, and the only way to close it is from task manager. Impossible to play.” Others echoed similar sentiments, mentioning a persistent error involving “NTDLL.dll” that has rendered their gaming experience unplayable.

In response to these issues, Ubisoft has provided a temporary fix for Star Wars Outlaws, but Microsoft cautions that players may still encounter performance problems. The tech giant is advising users to refrain from manually installing the 24H2 update and to use Task Manager to force-quit any unresponsive games until a more permanent solution is available.

Previous Compatibility Challenges

This is not the first time the 24H2 update has faced compatibility challenges. Last month, players experienced issues with competitive multiplayer games utilizing Epic’s Easy Anti-Cheat software, impacting popular titles such as Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Rocket League. Additionally, there were incompatibility concerns with certain Western Digital SSDs.

Microsoft has confirmed that it is collaborating with Ubisoft and other developers to rectify these glitches, although a specific timeline for a resolution has yet to be announced. The company has assured users that the update will be re-enabled for affected systems once the necessary fixes are implemented.

This situation underscores the complexities involved in managing large-scale operating system updates within a diverse landscape of software and hardware. As Microsoft works diligently to address these issues, users are encouraged to stay informed through official support channels and to consider updating only when stability is guaranteed.
