Fans of the beloved game Minecraft have been on a rollercoaster of emotions regarding the fate of its upcoming animated series. Initially announced in May 2024 to coincide with the game’s 15th anniversary, the project generated excitement as Netflix and Mojang revealed their collaboration. The creative team was bolstered by the appointment of Kevin Adams and Joe Xander, known for their work on the animated film “Next Gen,” as showrunners. Additionally, Marvel’s “What If…?” writer Ashley Bradley took the helm of the writing team, while the Australian studio Flying Bark Productions was brought on board for animation.
However, as time passed, updates about the animated series dwindled. The anticipated reveal at Netflix’s presentation during the Annecy Festival in 2026 did not materialize, leading to growing concerns among fans. Over the past year, the absence of new images or videos fueled speculation about a potential cancellation of the project.
Reassurances from Netflix and Mojang
In light of the mounting uncertainty, What’s on Netflix reached out to Netflix for clarification. A representative from the streaming service provided reassurance, confirming that the animated series remains in production and that development is progressing as planned. Shortly thereafter, Mojang’s Creative Director, Jens Bergensten, took to Bluesky to address fan concerns directly, stating,
“Yes, we are still working on it!”
Despite the positive affirmations, the timeline for the series remains unclear. Reports suggest that production could extend until 2028, and as of now, there is no official release date in sight. The anticipation continues to build as fans await further updates on this exciting venture into the world of Minecraft.
