Minecraft Java finally gets a Friends List and Peer-to-Peer multiplayer

Minecraft Java has welcomed the arrival of Snapshot 26.2, specifically Snapshot 7, bringing with it a wave of enhancements aimed at enriching the multiplayer experience. Among the most anticipated features is the introduction of a Friends List, designed to simplify the process of connecting with fellow players.

Enhanced Multiplayer Experience

This initial version, while promising, does come with its share of teething problems. Mojang has acknowledged these issues and has committed to ongoing improvements in subsequent snapshot releases. Alongside the Friends List, players can also look forward to new musical additions and adjustments to Potent Sulfur, enhancing the overall gameplay experience.

The Friends List feature can be accessed directly from the Title Screen and the Pause Menu, with a convenient default keybind set to “O”. Players will find a notification badge indicating friend requests, along with standard functionalities such as sending and receiving requests, canceling sent requests, and viewing different statuses: “Offline”, “Online”, “In a world”, and “In a joinable world”. Additionally, new privacy options allow players to customize their visibility from the main menu.

I need to make some friends…

To further streamline multiplayer interactions, Mojang has introduced Peer-to-Peer networking through a revamped multiplayer options menu, replacing the previous Open to LAN screen. This update enables players to open singleplayer worlds for online multiplayer, allowing for direct invitations to friends or enabling them to request access to join a player’s world.

For those eager to explore these new features in detail, additional information can be found in the official blog post announcement. As a suggestion for future updates, many players are hopeful for the introduction of official controller support, eliminating the need for modding in 2026.
