In the realm of gaming, the allure of AI-powered non-playable characters (NPCs) has captured the imagination of many. The idea of a character like Lydia from Skyrim engaging in meaningful dialogue beyond the confines of scripted lines is undeniably appealing. The prospect of characters whose conversations extend beyond pre-defined scripts opens up exciting possibilities for player interaction. However, the current state of AI in gaming often falls short of this promise.
Exploring Seed’s AI Interactions
Recently, I delved into Seed, an MMO colony simulation developed by Klang Games, which has just entered early access after a decade of development. In this vibrant world, players create seedlings—avatars reminiscent of The Sims—who can interact with each other using Seed’s AI. My initial interaction was surprisingly delightful. During character creation, I noticed my seedling’s comically disproportionate body, prompting me to inquire about his high-waisted appearance. To my amusement, he promptly pulled out a phone to text me back, responding with a playful take on the fashion trend.
“Hi!! I’m so happy to finally be talking to you!” my seedling exclaimed. When I asked, “Hey, why are you so high-waisted?” he replied, “Everyone’s wearing high-waisted right now! It’s like, totally the trend… Is it… not looking good?” This exchange was refreshing, showcasing a level of engagement that traditional NPCs often lack.
However, as my time in Seed progressed, the novelty of these interactions began to wear off. What initially felt like a charming quirk soon revealed itself to be a stroke of luck rather than a consistent feature of the AI. Subsequent conversations with both my seedling and others quickly devolved into awkward exchanges filled with unnecessary filler phrases. For instance, when my seedling asked another player’s character about their age, the response was laden with superfluous descriptors that did little to enhance the conversation.
“I am eighteen!! It feels like such a heavy, beautiful number,” came the reply. “Eighteen is such a classic age! Totally iconic,” my seedling responded, echoing the same overblown sentiment. Such dialogues, while amusing at first, soon became tedious and highlighted the limitations of the AI’s conversational abilities.
In another instance, my seedling remarked on another character’s smooth skin, only to receive a bizarrely convoluted response that failed to convey any meaningful interaction. The AI’s tendency to fill space with vague descriptors and repetitive phrases detracted from the immersion, making it clear that these were not genuine conversations but rather scripted responses lacking depth.
Despite these shortcomings, there are redeeming qualities to Seed’s AI. The tutorial robot, for example, provides helpful answers to gameplay questions, albeit with occasional misunderstandings. While this feature offers a quicker alternative to consulting a wiki, it does not always deliver the clarity one might hope for.
Moreover, the personalities of the seedlings, shaped by player choices, do shine through in their dialogues. Some characters exhibit curt responses, while others are effusive, adding a layer of personality that enhances the experience. Yet, the overall quality of conversation remains a significant hurdle, as the AI struggles to maintain engaging and coherent exchanges.
Ultimately, while the potential for AI-driven interactions in gaming is tantalizing, the current execution leaves much to be desired. The charm of limited but meaningful dialogue often outweighs the allure of endless chatter that lacks substance. As the industry continues to evolve, the challenge remains: can AI interactions truly enhance the gaming experience, or do they risk becoming mere filler in a world that thrives on genuine connection?
