In a recent discussion with Wrong Organ developers Jeffrey Tomec and Dave van Egdom, the evolution of their upcoming title, Carcass Clad, was unveiled. This game marks a significant departure from their previous success, Mouthwashing, yet it retains familiar themes and an engaging atmosphere. The conversation primarily focused on the studio’s shift towards co-op multiplayer gameplay, a decision that was not initially part of their vision.
Exploring the Co-op Experience
Tomec and van Egdom emphasized that the transition to a cooperative format was not a matter of “selling out,” but rather a natural progression as they pursued the concept of a tank-based game. The mechanics of Carcass Clad promise a unique experience: players will navigate the battlefield with limited visibility while piloting their vehicles. Gunners will find themselves in a zoomed-in, scoped view, reminiscent of a first-person shooter sniper who is unable to break away from their aim.
The gameplay introduces a third role—the commander—who holds the responsibility of providing strategic direction without direct control over the tank’s operations. Tomec described this dynamic as embodying the “man in the chair fantasy,” where effective communication and teamwork are paramount. The core challenge lies in the commander’s ability to relay clear instructions, enabling the other players to execute their roles efficiently.
As the developers shared insights into the game’s structure, they hinted at a blend of intense action and moments of respite. Van Egdom noted, “You will have some breaks. A run isn’t just sitting there for two hours, constantly moving.” The game will feature a structure akin to Left 4 Dead, incorporating safe rooms that allow players to step away from the tank, providing a necessary pause in the action.
While the development process is still underway, the team remains open to changes, with van Egdom stating, “We could change everything, man. We’re going to do what we have to to make the tank cool. That’s the baseline.” This flexibility reflects their commitment to crafting an engaging and dynamic gaming experience that resonates with players.
