My favorite Steam Next Fest demo puts Red Dead Redemption 2’s horses to shame

Last week, I immersed myself in the captivating world of Steam Next Fest demos, discovering a newfound appreciation for these brief yet exhilarating experiences. The ability to sample multiple games in a single evening, each offering a satisfying glimpse into their potential, has become a delightful pastime. Amidst my exploration, one title emerged as a standout: Legend of Khiimori.

My journey with Legend of Khiimori began when its initial gameplay snippet captured attention across social media platforms. Although it was merely a teaser, it ignited a longing within me for the expansive Mongolian steppe, where I envisioned myself forging a bond with my horse, eager to uncover what else this game had in store.

Immersive Gameplay and Horse Dynamics

Fortunately, the game offers a wealth of content. No RPG would be complete without quests and upgrades, and Khiimori excels in this area. My first hour was spent riding through the stunning landscapes, but it soon became clear that my trusty steed deserved more attention.

Initially, I knew little about horses—let’s correct that: I knew nothing. However, Legend of Khiimori dives deep into the intricacies of horse breeds, genetics, stats, and perks, transforming me into an amateur equestrian expert as I navigated the detailed menus. The game takes its equine elements seriously, showcasing speed stats that extend to three decimal places.

There are notable parallels to Death Stranding, particularly in the importance of balance, while echoes of The Last Guardian resonate through the relationship between the player and their horse. The Mongolian landscape may evoke memories of Shadow of the Colossus, yet the bond formed with my horse reminded me of the connection between the boy and Trico. It seems I have embraced my new identity as a “Horse Guy.”

The feedback surrounding the demo has been overwhelmingly positive, making the decision by developers Aesir Interactive and NightinGames to delay the release until next year somewhat unexpected. Originally slated for early access on November 4, the game will now debut in 2026.

The development team has outlined their focus areas, including enhancing player guidance, refining world experience, improving camera controls and UI, lowering minimum system requirements, and optimizing performance. While I didn’t encounter any significant issues during the demo, their commitment to delivering a polished product is commendable.

On a brighter note, the Next Fest demo will remain available until the end of November. For those who missed out on the excitement of Umamusume: Pretty Derby and are eager for some horse-centric gameplay, this is an excellent opportunity to experience a remarkable demo.

The Legend of Khiimori is set to release on March 3, 2026. The Steam demo will be accessible until November 30. You can wishlist the game and find the demo on Steam.
