The ongoing conflict in Gaza has led to devastating consequences, with estimates from Palestinian and UN organizations indicating that over 80 percent of the region has been destroyed by the Israeli army. In this context, a recent initiative from the Sultanate of Oman has drawn attention. Reports suggest that Oman has dispatched a substantial shipment of Nintendo Switch consoles to Gaza, featuring the latest edition of Minecraft, complete with customized Omani sword-clad warriors designed to “defend Gazans.” This move has sparked discussions about the role of gaming in a war-torn environment.
Gaming as a Means of Rebuilding
According to sources from Gaza, the shipment is said to include sufficient Minecraft credits aimed at empowering Palestinians to “rebuild Gaza” within the digital realm. However, uncertainty looms over whether the Israeli army will permit the shipment’s entry into Gaza. A local source expressed the importance of such games for young people and children, stating that they provide an outlet to cope with psychological stress and envision the reconstruction of their homeland post-conflict.
Historically, Palestinians have utilized Minecraft as a creative tool. In 2017, for instance, the game was employed to design public spaces in Gaza following previous conflicts that ravaged residential areas and infrastructure. Ahmed Ghalib, a structural engineer in Gaza, reflected on this innovative approach, noting, “Due to the 17-year Israeli blockade, we were compelled to invest in everything around us, including games, to create our world in the big-prison coastal enclave.” He emphasized the resilience of the Gazan people in overcoming obstacles to rebuild their territory with limited resources.
However, the current situation presents a stark contrast. With the extensive destruction wrought by the Israeli army, Ghalib acknowledges that the need for skilled engineers and designers is paramount for any meaningful reconstruction efforts. “To rebuild Gaza, we need hundreds of engineers and designers who would help us redesign the coastal enclave once again,” he stated, highlighting the profound changes to Gaza’s geography due to the conflict.
Ghada Zourob, a Palestinian engineer based in Rafah, voiced her concerns regarding the shipment from Oman. She criticized the notion that such games could serve as a solution to the dire circumstances in Gaza. “It seems that the Arabs, including Omanis, were not satisfied with the silence and failure towards the Israeli massacres taking place in Gaza,” she remarked. “They want to invest in our blood by financing such a shipment that will not benefit us in Gaza; it is only a waste of time and effort.” Zourob further lamented the disconnect between the realities faced by Gazans and the perceived support from the Arab world, questioning the efficacy of electronic games in addressing the urgent needs of those suffering from hunger and oppression.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli military has intensified its operations in Gaza, citing a response to an unprecedented attack by Hamas-led militants. The toll has been staggering, with reports indicating that over 45,000 Palestinians have lost their lives and more than 107,000 have sustained injuries, as documented by the Palestinian health ministry. In light of this humanitarian crisis, the call for tangible support and intervention from the international community remains critical.
