In a remarkable fusion of two beloved gaming franchises, modder RPGKing117 has introduced an innovative mod that allows players to experience The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind through the in-game Pip-Boy and computer terminals of Fallout 4. This creative endeavor comes just days before the controversial decision to incorporate quest markers into Morrowind, a move that has stirred debate among the gaming community.
Mod Features and Functionality
RPGKing117 has showcased the mod in a compelling demonstration available on YouTube, where it operates on a stationary computer terminal rather than the more familiar wrist-mounted Pip-Boy interface. While this may not be the most conventional way to engage with Morrowind, it certainly adds a unique twist to the gameplay experience.
The mod includes in-game cassettes featuring Morrowind’s box art, which players can collect and even use to decorate their homes in Sanctuary, adding a personal touch to their Fallout 4 environment.
Underneath its surface, the mod employs a straightforward yet effective mechanism. According to RPGKing117’s GitHub page, “OpenMW runs in a hidden window locked to 876×700 which gets upscaled to 1024×1024 and streams its framebuffer directly into Fallout 4’s Pip-Boy display in real time.” A dedicated F4SE plugin manages the holotape trigger, establishes a shared-memory bridge, and facilitates input passthrough, allowing keyboard controls to reach Morrowind while players remain immersed in Fallout 4.
Despite its relative simplicity, the journey to bring this mod to fruition was anything but easy. RPGKing117 reflected on the extensive effort involved, stating, “It took quite a lot of work, countless hours of beating my head against a wall but I am quite proud of the outcome.” In the video description, he expressed his hope that players who try the mod will find enjoyment in this unique crossover.
For those interested in exploring this innovative mod, it requires the Steam versions of both Fallout 4 and Morrowind, as well as the Fallout 4 Script Extender. Fortunately, players need not seek out the essential OpenMW source port independently, as RPGKing117 has included a custom fork of OpenMW within the installer available on GitHub.
