One of the most ambitious MMORPGs is finally coming to Steam soon with a big price cut, but it’s still far from finished

Ashes of Creation’s Steam Debut: A New Chapter for Intrepid Studios

Ashes of Creation, the ambitious MMORPG from Intrepid Studios, is set to make its debut on Steam, a development that has caught many by surprise. Having followed this project for nearly a decade, it’s exciting to envision its potential as a serious competitor to established giants like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV. Despite its initial announcement nine years ago, the journey is far from over, with much still to be accomplished. However, for those eager to engage with the game and contribute to its evolution, the opportunity will soon be at hand through Valve’s platform.

Our first conversation with Steven Sharif, the creative director of Ashes of Creation, took place back in 2018, shortly after the game’s successful Kickstarter campaign raised .2 million. Since then, the game has progressed into a more accessible format, currently in the Alpha Two phase. The third phase of testing commenced in August, yet the path ahead remains extensive. Intrepid Studios has stated, “Following this phase, we plan to move through Beta One and Beta Two, leading toward full launch once the game reaches the quality and stability our community deserves.”

It may come as a surprise to see Ashes of Creation listed as a new MMO on the Steam store, especially considering Sharif’s consistent reminders that the alpha test is still a work in progress. “The testing environment in Alpha Two right now can sometimes feel like a game, but it isn’t yet,” he noted earlier this year, emphasizing that the development team is still refining the experience.

For those curious about Ashes of Creation’s current state, there’s good news. The upcoming Steam release will offer the opportunity to experience the game at half its current price. The ‘Alpha Two Third Wave Bundle’ is available directly from Intrepid for 0, which includes access to both beta tests, a month of game time, and worth of in-game currency, Embers. Upon its arrival on Steam in December, this price will be reduced to , although players will receive a “non-exclusive cosmetic cloak” instead of the Embers.

Existing playtesters will not receive a Steam key, meaning they will need to either purchase the game on Steam or continue using the standalone client. Fortunately, both platforms will be fully cross-compatible, allowing players to choose their preferred method of access without losing progress. Additionally, those who participated in testing prior to the Steam launch will be rewarded with two unique titles that alter the appearance of their cloak: ‘Cultist of the Eternal Fire’ features a striking black and red design, while ‘Knight of the White Flame’ offers a more regal white and gold aesthetic.

The rationale behind this move to Steam is rooted in Intrepid’s commitment to creating a dynamic world that evolves based on player interactions. They emphasize that community testing is integral to their development philosophy. “Early Access allows us to bring testers directly into Verra during key stages of system building—whether that’s settlement progression, economy loops, combat balance, or world events. By engaging with the community early, we gather critical feedback, identify issues faster, and refine systems in real time,” the studio explained.

Ashes of Creation is scheduled to launch via Steam Early Access on Thursday, December 11, at a price of .99. For those who purchase within the first two weeks, a 15% discount will be available, bringing the price down to .49 until December 25. Interested players can wishlist the game now to receive notifications upon its release.
