PC Gamer’s MMO readers are, according to you, fashion-forward healers who like your keybinds, and I couldn’t be more proud

This is Terminally Online, PC Gamer’s dedicated MMO column, where I delve into the vibrant world of massively multiplayer online games. Each installment features interviews with fellow enthusiasts, explorations of often-overlooked mechanics, and occasional guest contributions discussing their favorite MMOs. While I typically share insights and opinions on the current landscape of MMOs, I also take time to engage with you, my valued readers, through discussions and polls that reveal your preferences and play styles.

Understanding Our Readers

Through a series of polls, I’ve gathered intriguing insights into the behaviors and preferences of our readership. The results are both enlightening and entertaining. For instance, in a questionnaire conducted earlier this year, I discovered that 32% of you identify as healers—a notable 5% ahead of DPS players and 7% more than those who prefer tanking. Interestingly, 10% of you, like myself, embrace any role available, while approximately 6% have ventured into Guild Wars 2, effectively escaping the traditional holy trinity of roles. Kudos to you!

In another poll focused on fashion within the gaming realm, a significant 36% of respondents declared that “fashion is the true endgame.” Meanwhile, 16% actively seek out essential glamour pieces, 17% dabble in outfit collection, and 7% maintain a basic level of appearance. Notably, this leaves 24% of you indifferent to fashion, opting to equip any gear without concern for aesthetics. Perhaps the ultimate fashion statement is simply not caring what others think—an intriguing notion to ponder.

Patience also seems to be a virtue among our readers. In the same poll, a remarkable 70% indicated that they remain unfazed by a slower dungeon run, viewing it as an issue only if it grinds to a halt. The remaining 30% were evenly divided between those urging a swift pace and those who are indifferent, with 16% advocating for “gogogo” and 15% expressing a laid-back attitude. This paints a picture of Terminally Online readers as fashionable healers with a commendable level of patience—an admirable demographic indeed.

Classic MMOs and Evolving Preferences

The most captivating poll result emerged from a discussion on the future of classic MMOs, characterized by tab-targeting and extensive keybinds. A majority of you believe these traditional formats are becoming outdated. However, opinions among those with strong feelings on the matter are strikingly divided. A precise 28% responded with “Yes, it’s about time,” while 27% expressed nostalgia with “Yes, and I yearn for the olden days.”

When we dissect the responses further, the sentiments become even clearer:

  • 35% voiced anti-tab-target sentiments, wishing for a shift away from this style.
  • 42% expressed a fondness for tab-targeting, lamenting its potential decline.
  • 23% remained ambivalent, indicating indifference to any changes.

As a pro-tab-target, keyboard-turning player myself, it’s reassuring to know I’m not alone in my preferences. But what about you? Does the profile of a fashion-forward healer with a touch of nostalgia resonate with your gaming identity, or do you find yourself in a different camp? I invite you to share your thoughts in the comments section.
