Peak studio Aggro Crab is publishing a sick-looking platformer about a blue collar guy doing dirty work on an alien world

At the recent Game Developers Conference, Nick Kaman, a developer from Aggro Crab, expressed his enthusiasm for the potential of co-op “friendslop” games, indicating a desire to continue exploring this genre. However, Aggro Crab is also venturing into new territory with their upcoming platformer, Rebounder, which promises to offer a distinct experience.

Artistic Vision and Gameplay Mechanics

In an industry where distinguishing oneself can be a formidable challenge, particularly for 2D platformers, Rebounder has managed to capture attention with its striking artistic style. The game showcases a color-limited, comic book aesthetic that resonates with players, blending seamlessly with its narrative and design elements. This visual approach evokes a blue-collar, working-class sci-fi vibe, reminiscent of works like Scavenger’s Reign and Alien.

What sets Rebounder apart is its inspiration drawn from kaizo games—those hardcore, challenge-driven fangames that have emerged from classic 2D platformers, particularly Super Mario World. While kaizo games are often seen as niche and somewhat intimidating for the average player, Aggro Crab’s decision to incorporate this style into a full-fledged game is a commendable and innovative move.

The gameplay promises to deliver tricky jumps and precise timing, hallmarks of the kaizo genre, while integrating unique sci-fi elements. Players can expect to navigate challenges that involve deft manipulation around defeated Koopa shells, a staple of the platforming experience.

With its compelling story, captivating art style, and a fresh take on a beloved genre, Rebounder is shaping up to be an exciting addition to the gaming landscape. Set for a general release in 2027, enthusiasts can already add it to their wishlists on Steam, eagerly anticipating its arrival.
