Pillars of Eternity’s 10-year anniversary turn-based mode will sidestep the biggest issues I was worried it would have, and you can try it this week

Obsidian Entertainment has taken a significant step forward in the evolution of its acclaimed RPG series, Pillars of Eternity, by unveiling further details about the highly anticipated turn-based mode. Following the announcement made eight months ago, the studio has confirmed that the open beta will commence on Wednesday, November 5. In a recent YouTube video, director Josh Sawyer elaborated on the intricacies of this new gameplay mode.

Insights from the Director

In his discussion, Sawyer reflected on the initial implementation of real-time with pause (RTWP) mechanics in the original Pillars of Eternity. He noted that the decision was influenced by a landscape where many turn-based RPGs lacked the tactical depth players craved, alongside the growing popularity of real-time strategy (RTS) games. As a result, Pillars aimed to honor this classic gameplay style.

However, the introduction of a turn-based mode in Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire raised concerns among fans. Players found themselves faced with the challenge of choosing between two distinct gameplay styles at the start of their journey. This choice not only altered the experience but also necessitated a reevaluation of character builds, as the design changes inadvertently affected the balance of various playstyles.

Adapting to Modern Expectations

As the gaming landscape has evolved, so too have player expectations. Action RPGs have accelerated gameplay mechanics, while newer turn-based titles like XCOM and Baldur’s Gate 3 have set a high bar for tactical richness and accessibility. This shift has left RTWP in a somewhat precarious position, caught between the demands of fast-paced action and the strategic depth that modern players seek.

With the upcoming beta, Obsidian aims to bridge this gap, offering players a fresh perspective on the beloved world of Pillars of Eternity. As anticipation builds, fans are eager to explore how these changes will enhance their gaming experience.
