In early 2025, the gaming community was introduced to Prologue: Go Wayback!, a survival game that invites players to navigate through a damp and hungry wilderness. The initial experience left many, including myself, pondering the potential for wildlife to enhance the immersive environment. The idea of being pursued by a bear through the woods seemed like an exhilarating addition. However, Brendan Greene, the visionary behind PlayerUnknown, has clarified the direction for upcoming downloadable content (DLC) and the challenges that come with it.
Insights from Brendan Greene
Greene addressed the community’s second most requested feature: the inclusion of animals. He acknowledged the technical feasibility of adding wildlife but emphasized the complexity involved in creating realistic artificial intelligence (AI) for these creatures. “If we add animals, that would mean you need something to defend from animals,” Greene explained. He expressed a desire to focus resources on crafting a more complete world, incorporating elements such as paths, power lines, and expansive points of interest beyond mere cabins. “I think the weather is sufficiently worrying at this stage,” he added, hinting at the existing challenges players face in the game.
While the prospect of hunting rabbits or wrestling with wolves may not materialize soon, Greene remains committed to enriching the game’s atmosphere. “I’d like to see underground areas,” he shared, reflecting on the narrative potential of such features. “If we can do this, maybe it’s a DLC one, where you have to get access to underground areas on the map that appear.” This vision suggests a future where exploration leads to hidden depths, enhancing the overall gameplay experience.
Since its early access launch, Prologue has already seen several new features, including hot fixes and the introduction of two distinct modes catering to different player styles. Greene noted that the development team aims to remain flexible with update schedules, allowing for community feedback to shape the game’s evolution. “For Prologue, I imagined about a year in early access. Maybe more, depending on when the sort of generation tech is stable enough,” he stated, outlining plans for three DLCs that would introduce new story elements and enhance the world’s depth.
Among the anticipated features for future updates is the possibility of multiplayer functionality. Greene expressed his enthusiasm for co-op multiplayer in the third DLC, acknowledging it as one of the most requested features. “I keep saying, co-op multiplayer, DLC three,” he reiterated. The allure of exploring the beautifully crafted yet enigmatic world alongside friends presents an exciting prospect for players eager to share their adventures.
As the development team continues to refine Prologue, Greene emphasized the importance of creating a more structured environment. “To get out of Early Access, I’d really like to see the world with a little bit more infrastructure,” he remarked. This focus on visual and optimization enhancements aims to elevate the overall gaming experience, ensuring that players are met with a polished and engaging world.
