The Next Step: ARMSX3, a New Project by the Creators of ARMSX2
The team behind the popular mobile PlayStation 2 emulator ARMSX2 has recently unveiled their latest project – ARMSX3. This experimental port of RPCS3 for Android devices is currently in the “proof of concept” stage, signaling a significant advancement towards full PlayStation 3 emulation on smartphones.
To bring RPCS3 to mobile platforms, the developers had to overcome various technical challenges. One key achievement was ensuring that ARMSX3 could compile shaders correctly on Adreno graphics accelerators. Additionally, the emulator now optimally distributes demanding threads among high-performance cores in processors with energy-efficient cores.
During testing by Android Authority journalists on the vivo X300 Ultra, Catherine ran at around 22 frames per second, while 3D Dot Game Heroes achieved 15 frames. Although Skate 3 experienced freezing issues, the ARMSX3 team successfully ran it on a less powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 device, achieving 20-30 FPS.
The focus now shifts to optimizing performance, expanding the list of compatible games, and resolving any crashes, graphical glitches, or interface issues. While no official release dates for a more stable version of ARMSX3 have been announced, the initial results demonstrate the feasibility of running PlayStation 3 games on modern Android smartphones.
The early version of ARMSX3 is already available for free download on GitHub, offering enthusiasts a glimpse into the future of mobile gaming emulation.
