Portal 2 has long been a staple in the gaming community, easily earning its place as a must-recommend title. A significant part of its enduring appeal lies in the vibrant custom levels scene that has flourished over the past decade. With approximately one million user-generated levels available on its Steam Workshop, the game continues to inspire creativity among players. Recently, the release of Portal 2: Community Edition into open beta has sparked excitement, particularly for those who have encountered the limitations of the original game while attempting to mod it.
Enhancements and New Features
The developers behind Community Edition have made it clear that this is not a remake or a complete overhaul of Portal 2’s core gameplay or campaign. Instead, it is a “community-maintained” build designed to enhance the existing experience. The update introduces a range of features, including:
- New lighting technology
- Volumetric effects
- Support for more detailed textures
- Custom campaign support with an integrated user interface
- Expanded scripting capabilities
- An improved Hammer map editor
Built on Strata Source, a fork of the CS:GO engine, Community Edition has already been utilized to create innovative mods, such as Portal: Revolution. The announcement video provides a detailed breakdown of the changes and showcases some of the exciting creations that have emerged thus far. One notable example featured on the Steam page is a custom level that ingeniously condenses all of Portal 1 into a single map, leaving many eager to see what modders will produce now that the Community Edition is accessible to all.
Additionally, the mod’s workshop page offers a variety of new content, including:
- Half-Life 2 maps now available through the custom campaign menu
- A collection of assets recreated with enhanced textures
- An original puzzle titled Lesbian Kissing
While the current selection of new playable content may be limited, the team behind Community Edition is actively working on an original campaign to accompany the mod. As time progresses, it is anticipated that modders will unleash their creativity, leading to custom maps that could easily be mistaken for entirely different games.
