In a significant shift within its operational structure, ProbablyMonsters has made the difficult decision to reduce its workforce, specifically impacting the BattleBarge team. Reports indicate that approximately 50 employees have been laid off, a figure confirmed by various sources, including a former staff member on LinkedIn.
Strategic Realignment
In response to these layoffs, ProbablyMonsters issued a statement emphasizing the need for a “realignment to support smaller, more nimble teams and projects.” The company articulated its belief that this new approach would better align with the evolving needs of players and the broader market landscape.
“Our hearts go out to everyone impacted as we navigate the new realities of the gaming landscape as an independent company,” the statement continued, reflecting the company’s commitment to its remaining staff and the challenges faced in the current industry climate.
Founded in 2019 by Harold Ryan, a former leader at Bungie, ProbablyMonsters serves as an incubator for game developers. Among its notable studios is Firewalk, which was acquired by PlayStation in 2023. However, Firewalk recently faced its own challenges, culminating in its closure following the underwhelming performance of its hero shooter, Concord.
