Ubisoft’s holiday season has taken an unexpected turn, as the company grapples with a series of security breaches affecting its popular title, Rainbow Six Siege X. Following a significant hack last week that flooded players with in-game currency, the developer was compelled to take the game offline, execute a server rollback, and temporarily disable its marketplace. Just over a week later, the game has faced another wave of targeted attacks, raising concerns about the integrity of its online environment.
Recent Breaches Raise Security Concerns
The latest incident, while not as extensive as the previous breach, has nonetheless sparked alarm among the community. Streamers, including notable figure Chris ‘VarsityGaming,’ have reported receiving notifications of in-game bans for alleged harassment, with durations humorously set at 67 days—a nod to the infamous 6-7 meme circulating within the gaming community. However, it quickly became evident that these bans were not legitimate, as VarsityGaming was still able to participate in ranked matches, and the ban message vanished upon restarting the game.
Further complicating the situation, players have encountered modified messages that mimic the standard notifications issued after reporting someone in-game, including absurd figures like “67,676,767” reports leading to action. Another notification simply states, “some nice text,” adding a layer of confusion to the ongoing issues.
Despite the more targeted nature of this breach, it underscores significant vulnerabilities within Siege’s server security. The official server status page indicates ongoing authentication and matchmaking outages across all platforms, alongside the previously established in-game store outage. Currently, the connectivity status is marked as ‘degraded,’ and Ubisoft has yet to provide a detailed response to this latest hacking attempt.
While all multiplayer games inevitably encounter challenges related to cheaters and hackers, the severity of the recent incidents affecting Rainbow Six Siege X is notably unusual. Although the ramifications of this latest breach are less severe than the prior one, it is clear that Ubisoft faces substantial work ahead to bolster its security measures and restore player confidence.
