In a strategic move ahead of the console launch of Ready or Not, developers at Void Interactive implemented a small update aimed at aligning the game with console standards. This adjustment, which some have interpreted as censorship, has sparked significant backlash from the PC gaming community, leading to a wave of negative reviews on Steam.
Sales Success Amid Controversy
Despite the uproar, the transition to console appears to have been fruitful for Void Interactive, as they proudly announced the sale of 1 million units within just 3.6 days of launch. This impressive figure was shared in a LinkedIn post, highlighting the rapid success of the game on console platforms.
Concurrent players on Steam have surged dramatically, climbing from just under 6,000 to an impressive 40,000, nearing the all-time peak of 55,174 recorded a year and a half ago. However, the game currently holds a predominantly negative rating on Steam, with players voicing concerns over the removal of “key story content,” including scenes that some describe as pivotal to the game’s narrative experience.
Among the complaints, players have expressed a desire for an option that would allow PC users to toggle censorship features, particularly regarding nudity, which console players do not have the ability to adjust. Yet, despite the calls for revisiting these changes, Void Interactive seems steadfast in their decision to maintain the current course.
Rodriguez, a representative from the development team, expressed pride in the collective achievements of the team, stating, “It’s a huge moment, and one we don’t take for granted. Game reviews are holding strong as we head into our first weekend, and the team is already hard at work ironing out issues and continuously improving the experience. To our players, partners, and everyone who believed in the project, thank you.”
Reaching the milestone of 1 million units sold in under four days is undoubtedly a significant achievement, one that likely aligns with the developers’ expectations when they made the controversial updates. As the dust settles on the initial backlash, it seems clear that Void Interactive values the opportunity to access console markets, perhaps prioritizing this over maintaining a pristine review score on Steam.
