Engine giant Unity is reportedly embarking on another round of layoffs, a move that has sent ripples through the organization. According to a recent report from 80 Level, CEO Matthew Bromberg communicated this decision to staff via email, indicating that job cuts are imminent. While the exact number of affected employees remains unclear, it has been confirmed that the Chief Technology Officer, along with teams focused on Engine Product and Ads, will face reductions.
Rationale Behind the Cuts
In his correspondence, Bromberg sought to clarify the reasoning behind these layoffs. He explained that the engine team has been grappling with an overwhelming workload, and despite efforts to bolster staff numbers, productivity has not improved. In fact, the influx of new hires has inadvertently hindered progress.
Additionally, the restructuring of the advertising products division stems from Unity’s recent merger with Ironsource. This integration necessitates the consolidation of teams involved in advertising into the Runtime business, leading to further adjustments within the company.
Bromberg expressed gratitude to those who will be affected by the layoffs, acknowledging their contributions to Unity. He emphasized the company’s commitment to managing these transitions with care and consideration, ensuring that impacted employees receive adequate support during this challenging time.
“I want to thank each impacted colleague for their contributions to Unity,” Bromberg stated. “We’ll do everything we can to handle these difficult changes with a lot of care and consideration, and to support impacted employees through this transition. Please remember to take care of yourselves as well.”
To assist those facing job loss, Unity will provide confidential support through Lyra and extend access to mental health benefits for departing employees, underscoring the company’s dedication to the well-being of its workforce amidst these changes.
