Rockstar Games has recently shared some noteworthy updates regarding the beloved Grand Theft Auto franchise, albeit not the highly anticipated news many fans were hoping for.
Free Upgrades for Current Players
Beginning June 18, players who own Grand Theft Auto V on PS4 or the digital edition for Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the enhanced versions available on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S at no additional cost. This current-gen version, which debuted in March 2022 as a paid upgrade, boasts significant visual enhancements and performance improvements, including quicker transitions between the game’s three protagonists. Moreover, players can seamlessly transfer their save data and online progress during the upgrade process.
PC gamers are also in for a treat, as they can upgrade from older versions to the Enhanced edition, which was released last year. This edition not only includes the same enhancements found in the console versions but also introduces exclusive features for PC players, such as ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination.
A Shift in the Gaming Landscape
The introduction of free upgrades comes at a time when more players are likely to own the latest consoles or upgraded PCs compared to four years ago. However, this move may also signal a potential shift in Rockstar’s support for older platforms. The company previously discontinued GTA Online on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2021, leading to speculation about a similar fate for the PS4 and Xbox One versions.
Anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI
While these updates are welcomed by the community, many fans are eagerly awaiting information about Grand Theft Auto VI. It appears that Rockstar is committed to the current release date of November 19, following several delays. Parent company Take-Two has indicated that marketing efforts for GTA VI will intensify this summer, hinting that the third trailer for the game—its first in over a year—may be just around the corner.
