Not long after its launch on February 28, 2001, Runescape introduced the quest “Prince Ali Rescue,” marking the beginning of the Desert quest line. Fast forward 24 years, and players can finally anticipate the conclusion of this extensive storyline. During the recent RuneFest event, it was announced that the long-awaited finale will unfold through the “Return to the Desert” trilogy, set to be released in April and July.
Unveiling the Desert Trilogy
Mod Shrike, addressing the audience at RuneFest, recounted the adventures players have embarked on over the years. “You’ve raided tombs, discovered ancient artifacts, and engaged in a fair bit of smuggling,” he noted. “You’ve even restored the spirit of a long-dead pharaoh queen.” Throughout these quests, players have navigated the desert, delving deeper into its pantheon, particularly focusing on Amascut, the cat goddess of destruction.
The journey has led players to the gates of Menaphos, the golden city, where they uncovered the fates of three lesser gods: Crondis, Apmeken, and Hets, liberating them from Amascut’s corruption. Mod Zura echoed the sentiment of the community, stating, “More recently, you’ve made it clear that you want us to finish older storylines. Starting with last year’s ‘Ode of the Devourer,’ and continuing with the ‘Return to the Desert Trilogy,’ we are finally bringing this 24-year-old storyline to its conclusion.”
The trilogy commenced with “Beneath Scabaras’ Sands” in January, followed by “Pharaoh’s Folly” in April, and culminating with “Eclipse of the Heart” in July. Players can expect to revisit familiar locations from the Desert series, enhanced with features such as improved odds for Slayers to catch Slayer souls and better journal log drops.
As the narrative unfolds, several beloved characters will receive updated appearances, including Amascut, who will regain her “divine feline form.” Additionally, players will face Amascut in a new battle, which will also feature the game’s first-ever world-first race. This culmination of a long-standing quest line serves as a testament to the enduring nature of narratives within MMOs, offering a satisfying conclusion to a story that has captivated players for decades.
