Facepunch Studios has had a dynamic year with its survival simulation game, Rust, marked by a series of significant updates and expansions. The beginning of 2025 saw the introduction of a medieval-themed primitive mode, followed by the unveiling of an expansive jungle biome in March. As the seasons progressed, the developers experimented with innovative changes to the game’s progression systems and overall meta, keeping the community engaged throughout the summer and autumn months.
Naval Update Delayed
However, the most anticipated update of the year—the naval expansion—has encountered delays. This update promises to elevate Rust’s survivalist gameplay by allowing players to construct their own ships and engage in thrilling naval battles. Unfortunately, fans eager to embrace their inner pirate will need to exercise patience, as the release has been postponed.
In a candid blog post titled “Shipwrecked,” COO Alistair McFarlane addressed the situation, reflecting on the studio’s commitment to delivering consistent updates over the past twelve years. “For almost 12 years we have managed to deliver weekly updates or, in more recent years, guaranteed monthly updates with meaningful changes. It has become part of Rust’s identity. Turning up, every month, without fail. Not today,” he shared, acknowledging the disappointment while emphasizing the importance of quality over haste.
While the naval update may be delayed, players can still look forward to some festive cheer. McFarlane confirmed that a selection of features initially intended for this week will be incorporated into a Christmas update scheduled for December 18. Following this, a smaller update in January will introduce “light changes” alongside a preview of Facepunch’s strategic plans for Rust in 2026.
As the year draws to a close, the community remains hopeful and engaged, ready to embrace the new adventures that await in the evolving world of Rust.
