SAG-AFTRA reaches “tentative” agreement with games companies

The SAG-AFTRA performers’ union has announced a significant development in its ongoing negotiations with leading video game companies. In a recent update on its website, the union revealed that it has reached a tentative agreement with major industry players, including Activision, EA, and Epic Games, concerning its interactive media contract. This arrangement is poised for review and approval by SAG-AFTRA’s board in the near future.

Negotiations Amidst Strikes

Since July 2024, video game performers represented by the union have been on strike, advocating for essential protections related to the use of artificial intelligence in game development. The strike underscored the performers’ commitment to safeguarding their livelihoods in an evolving industry landscape.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the union’s national executive director and chief negotiator, expressed gratitude for the perseverance shown by video game performers throughout the protracted negotiations. “Everyone at SAG-AFTRA is immensely grateful for the sacrifices made by video game performers and the dedication of the Interactive Media Agreement Negotiating Committee throughout these many months of the video game strike,” he stated. He emphasized that the agreement introduces crucial A.I. guardrails aimed at protecting performers’ interests in this new era, alongside other significant advancements.

Fran Drescher, president of SAG-AFTRA, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the strength and resolve of the video game performers. “Our video game performers stood strong against the biggest employers in one of the world’s most lucrative industries. Their incredible courage and persistence, combined with the tireless work of our negotiating committee, has at last secured a deal,” she remarked. Drescher noted that the progress achieved is a testament to the collective efforts of the performers and the negotiating team, stating, “The needle has been moved forward and we are much better off than before.”

As the union prepares for the ratification of this agreement, Drescher indicated that the work is far from over. “As soon as this is ratified, we roll up our sleeves and begin to plan the next negotiation. Every contract is a work in progress, and progress is the name of the game,” she concluded, setting the stage for future initiatives in the ever-evolving landscape of the video game industry.
