Sony reportedly scaling back PC ports for PlayStation exclusives

Sony has made a strategic decision to scale back its plans for releasing PlayStation 5 exclusives on the PC platform. According to sources familiar with the company’s internal discussions, as reported by Bloomberg, the sales performance of PS5 games on PC has not met expectations. This shift appears to stem from concerns that PC ports could potentially dilute the brand’s strength and adversely affect the sales of the PS5 and its future iterations.

While a spokesperson for PlayStation refrained from commenting on these developments, the company is still poised to launch certain online games, such as Marathon and Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, across multiple platforms.

Future of PlayStation Titles

In a notable departure from its previous approach, Sony had initially embraced the idea of releasing major titles on PC, starting with significant franchises like God of War and The Last of Us in 2020. The company even launched Helldivers 2 on PC at its debut, differentiating it from single-player titles that typically enjoy longer exclusivity periods.

However, reports indicate that upcoming titles such as Ghost of Yōtei and Housemarque’s action game Saros will remain exclusive to the PS5. In contrast, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Kena: Scars of Kosmora are expected to receive PC ports in the future.

The PC version of Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut, released in 2024, marked a significant milestone as it was the first PlayStation title to incorporate features like trophies, PSN profiles, and friends lists through a PS overlay. However, the rollout was not without its challenges; the PC port of Helldivers 2 faced backlash over the requirement for PSN connectivity, prompting Sony to reconsider this stipulation.

Adding to the complexity of Sony’s future plans, recent reports suggest that the company may postpone the launch of its next-generation console until 2028 or 2029. This delay is attributed to the ongoing AI-driven memory shortage crisis, which continues to impact the tech industry at large.
