Valve’s rating system for the Steam Deck and SteamOS has seen a notable acceleration, with the count of games now rated as at least playable reaching an impressive 20,000. This marks a significant increase from the 19,000 milestone achieved in May, 18,000 in March, and 17,000 in November 2024.
Understanding the Ratings
When a game is designated as at least playable on the Steam Deck, it guarantees compatibility with SteamOS as well. However, the criteria for rating on SteamOS differ slightly from those on the Steam Deck, focusing primarily on whether the game can load and be played. Performance and features may vary depending on the specific device running SteamOS. In contrast, the Steam Deck ratings encompass a broader range of checks, including performance metrics, full controller support, and resolution capabilities.

While there have been challenges with the ratings system in the past, the primary aim is to provide users with a clear indication of what should be playable. However, perceptions of what constitutes “playable” can vary widely among users. Although the system is not flawless, similar discrepancies occur on traditional consoles where some games may not perform optimally. It is hoped that Valve will continue refining their testing processes to enhance accuracy over time.
Given the distinctive nature of Steam for Linux systems such as Steam Deck and SteamOS, the current count reflects only those games that have undergone testing. Many more titles are likely to be playable, expanding the gaming landscape for users.
